Finding America: Hutch's Pool Overnight

Bruce LComment

MARCH 2023

Hutch’s Pool via West Fork Sabino Canyon Trail #24 - Actual start from Sabino Visitor Center to Phoneline trail.

Finally got it together for an overnight backpacking trip. Solitude, views, weather and plenty of water!

Flowers are popping out everywhere. Unfortunately my current lens is not great at macro shots. But a few are nice reminders.

Getting high on the Phoneline Trail. Bang for buck!

Easy access and great views. Clouds and early morning(ish) light is a recipe for drama.

Looking across Sabino Canyon.

Looking north towards the end of the Sabino Canyon Tram road below.

Leaving the Phoneline trail with a vew south towards the end of the tram road.

Along Sabino Creek.

View back towards Palisade Canyon.

Along Hutch’s Pool.

A bit tough to get sleep with the water rushing, but comes the the territory. This would be the last night with my Lanshan 1 tent. Just too small unless pitched perfectly and left me wanting a bit more fly coverage after the storm near Mount Hood last Fall. But, it served me well. Can’t wait to try out my new tent!

Great site with view of the creek.

This was an interesting section I had to cross just before the tent site. Up to my knees and flowing fast. I opted to go bare foot and it was cold! The next morning same, only with the addition of dark clouds, thunder and a brief graupel shower. Fortunately the weather stayed off to the north of me.

The only place to get my feet wet. Which was not exactly easy, but other crossings kept me entertained with the challenge of rock hopping.

Starting out on day 2. Flat morning light.

Sun punching through cloud holes. My kinda weather. Looking back towards darker weather.

Higher up with Hutch’s Pool in the rear view mirror.

Always look back.

Trail junction. Going right towards Bear Canyon and Seven Falls.

Beautiful saddle. Thimble Peak top center.

A glimpse of Seven Fall Trail below.

Seven Falls. Decided to keep moving when there are less crowds. Next time. It will be there.
