The North Rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, CO.

I decided once again to head north to avoid the approaching rainy weather. After crossing the mountain passes, I decided to revisit Black Canyon of the Gunnison. This time I chose the North Rim, which I hadn’t been to before. Although it doesn’t have as many convenient overlooks as the South Rim, I enjoyed the solitude and having a good base camp nearby.

After talking with a park volunteer about hiking into the canyon, hearing reports of abundant poison ivy made it an easy decision to skip that idea.

The Black Canyon of the Gunnison was carved over millions of years by the Gunnison River, cutting nearly 2,700 feet into some of North America's oldest exposed rock. Its towering, narrow walls create deep shadows that give the canyon its name. The area became a national park in 1999.
