The Ruby Mountains
Rising sharply from Nevada’s Great Basin, the Ruby Mountains stretch nearly 80 miles and earn their nickname as the “Swiss Alps of Nevada.” Known for glacially carved canyons, alpine lakes, and rugged granite peaks—topped by 11,387-foot Ruby Dome—the range offers a stunning mix of high-desert solitude and alpine beauty. Whether exploring Lamoille Canyon or hiking the Ruby Crest Trail, visitors find some of the most striking and uncrowded mountain scenery in the West.

Castle Lake Loop: ~ 11.3 mi long, ~ 2,874 ft elevation gain.
A varied alpine area is my happy place. Alpine lakes, patches of snow, color and sky…
What a beautiful time of year to visit this range! The glowing accents of foliage and the views were amazing. I found a great place to camp nearby through Harvest Hosts, which has a membership to stay at people’s places along the way. Nice to know be able to relax, have a safe place to stay and be nearby to my latest adventures.
Ruby Dome (attempt) via Hennen Canyon: ~ 9.3 mi long, ~ 4,842 ft elevation gain.
Working with the weather forecast and knowing the exposure this area would have, I jumped on this trail wishing I had another rest day. Even coming up short, I knew I was moving too slowly and decided to turnaround before the final ridge. But any day in the mountains is a good one.
